Empire State Building & Observatory Tower

Named after New York's nickname "The Empire State" this spectacular skyscraper towers for 103 splendid stories above the city. Designed in Art Deco style, the tower was completed in 1931. It reigned as the world's tallest building until 1972, when the World Trade Center was completed. Today, visitors can ride up to the observatory deck on the 86th floor for a breathtaking 360-degree scene of the New York skyline. It's open until 2am so you can experience the beauty of the Big Apple late at night.

Annual Run-Up

Every year the New York Road Runners club organizes a thrilling race to the top of the building. Runners gather to race up 86 flights totaling 1,576 steps. The fastest runners can complete the task in about ten minutes!

ESB After Dark

The Observatory is open late into the New York night, so you can capture incredible images of the skyline all lit up. Even if you have visited during the day, it is worth coming back in the evening to see the city in a whole new way. ESB is open until 2am daily, with the last elevators going up at 1:15 am. Even better, you can hear live music Thursdays through Saturdays from 10pm to 1am.

  • How often does it change colors?

The classic lighting scheme of the tower is white, but it frequently changes to reflect the season or special events in the city. There is a sophisticated LED system boasting over 9 million lights that can be programmed in an endless amount of designs and colors. The entire schedule is posted online so you can know what the colors represent.
  • What are some iconic films that feature the ESB?

King Kong from 1933 is probably the most famous movie to highlight this New York skyscraper, but don’t forget the remake by Peter Jackson made in 2005. A dramatic scene during the climax of Sleepless in Seattle is hard to forget, and in the Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow blimps dock at the top of the tower.
